The Vintage Race Car Parts team enjoyed a successful weekend at the HSRCA’s 2016 Tasman Trophy over the 19th and 20th of November, bringing home the Tasman Cup, John Dawson-Damer Trophy and Leo Geoghegan Trophy after two days of historic motorsport.
This event saw an excellent field of historic sports and racing cars gather at Sydney Motorsport Park to celebrate the Tasman Series. A highlight of the entry was the significant contingent of international entrants, including cars from as far as the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States, who travelled all the way to Sydney to take part.
We entered the Repco Brabham BT-23-B in Group O, P & invited M competition, with Richard Carter, a very quick driver and passionate member of the historic racing community, handling driving duties. Richard was assisted by Scott Fleming who is an excellent race engineer. It was the first competitive outing for the BT-23-B, which has been the recipient of considerable work over the past 12 months.
Two races were held on the Saturday and the Brabham started on the second row of the grid after a successful qualifying run. Richard had an excellent start and was leading by turn one followed closely by Chris Farrell also in a Repco Brabham. Chris and Richard swapped the lead several times during the race, enjoying a fantastic battle from which Richard in the BT-23-B would eventually emerge victorious.
The pair picked up where they left off in second race, with Chris Farrell taking the lead and the two cars dicing within fractions of a second of each other. This time Chris was able to hold the lead across the chequered flag.
The Tasman Trophy Race on Sunday was a similar affair, with Richard starting from pole. He had a great start to lead the race for eight laps until there was a minor incident which resulted in a yellow flag being bought out and the race ending.
Two wins and a second was a great result for the team. The BT-23-B ran faultlessly throughout the weekend.
In 2017 we intend to run in two to three meetings. Winton Race Circuit in Victoria in August, Sydney Motor Sport Park in November and possibly Wakefield Park in NSW.
